Take care of your knees (The Straits Times Classifieds)

July 14, 2016

Dr Tan Chyn Hong shared with The Straits Times readers some tips on maintaining healthy knees.

A common cause of knee injury may stem from cartilage damage. Dr Tan says that some supplements may be helpful for cartilage damage repair. These supplements include Type 2 collagen, glucosamine and chondroitin.

The knee is also closely related to the foot. Proper footwear is important for more even distribution of weight and pressure on the feet and knees. Wearing shoes with appropriate insoles can help correct malalignment in the limb and hip for flat-footed people.

The key to healthy knees that function well is maintaining good flexibility and strength. Exercises like stretching and bending benefits knee flexibility, whilst straight leg raising and half squats strengthens your knees. However, do avoid squatting down if your knees hurt.
