Dr Yue Wai Mun was invited to participate in the International Forum of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery in Shanghai, China on 31 October 2015. The annual forum was organised by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University, which is one of the top universities in China. As an expert on the topic, he delivered a lecture titled “Evidence and Current Status of MIS TLIF (Minimally Invasive Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion) in the Treatment of Lumbar Degenerative Disc Disease”. During his lecture, Dr Yue shared with the audience of about 200 spine surgeons from all over China his experience and research findings on MIS TLIF. Some of the topics include:

  • The benefits of MIS TLIF over traditional open spine surgery: lesser blood loss, lesser pain, faster recovery and lower infection rate while preserving the good long term outcomes of the open procedure;
  • Research findings on the long learning curve for the MIS TLIF surgeon which once overcome (estimated at 44 surgeries), will allow the patients to achieve even better outcomes from the surgery.
